Probably was a time when you weren't allowed to have an opinion. Certainly as a child we would have been told that it didn't matter what we thought and even unsafe for us to express ourselves in any way at all. I know how those old tapes keep us in chains from time to time. Don't beat yourself up for not being able to say anything it's an old safety mechanism.
