I used to put "bad rewards or good to me things" in the predictable locations where I would absentmindedly reach for my sickarettes (perfect term!). Hand lotion, gum, Hershey's Kisses, candle to light for perseverance, dog leash for a walk, dog biscuit for distraction, an old toothbrush to say go brush your teeth and other crazy things!
