I'm really sorry your ex grabbed your arm and screamed at you like he did. And to then, on top of that, take your pets away!!  How awful for you!!!
Were you two married or just bf/gf? In some states, depending on their laws, you can file for custody of the "family" pets. If they were your animals as much as they were his, I would call legal aid or an attorney and see if there is something you could do to get your dogs back.
I think his behavior was very inappropriate. I would even suggest filing a police report for him being assaultive and threatening like he was.
