Malady: Only from seeing your links and hearing about this through cultural osmosis did it start thinking about the paradigm of the "kundalini crisis" as having any bearing upon its original experiences, etc.
It's been my experience that a.) we always need to go back to when everything began, and b.) there is nearly always a significant stressor in an individual's life previous to a fragmentation crisis that seriously challenges their sense of identity (ego). In terms of my own experience I think kundalini played a role but the effects may have been experienced differently. Kundalini is "supposed" to clear emotional blockages in the chakras as it moves through them and this can be physically painful. I know you've had plenty of that too.
Meantime, here's a link to two medically documented case of kundalini crisis.
Quote:
Cause: Kundalini
Two patients are described who had been diagnosed as schizophrenic, but had actually instead been going through spiritual crises, which in Eastern spiritual tradition are called raising the kundalini. Perhaps this experience is not a disease, but many--especially if not understood by oneself, the nearest relations and the medical profession--cause mental illness. In WHO ICD-10 the experience could be classified as F48.8, disordines neurotici specificati alii. The process falls outside the categories of both normal and psychotic. When allowed to progress to completion this process culminates in deep psychological balance, strength, and maturity.

There is plenty of information available on the net in regard to kundalini but one site I would recommend to you is El Collie's. If you're going to use google as a search engine it can sometimes help to use a search engine for a specific country. For example, since yoga is more commonly practiced in India, you might find more information on kundalini crises using
http://www.google.co.in/
.
