Hi there,

There is a large portion of people with BPD who are dependable and can hold down jobs for exteneded periods......as with all mental illness dx, there are variations in the functionality with that person......personality and other factors are involved.

I don't know how many dx criteria you need to be dx with BPD now, but it was pretty "linear" when I was dx 15 years ago. In 15 years, I have raised a child single-handedly, had high profile jobs(although I did not work when my son was young). I can't say I was having a good time(because it was AWFUL) but I have had long periods of high functioning and long periods of not being able to function at all......

If you are concerned, I agree with Pupp........a second opinion would be good........there should be extensive personality testing, at least 13 weeks of therapy and observation and a clear indication of feelings and behaviours relating to BPD. If your first doctor did not do this thorough dx process, I would be hesitant and seek another opinion.......

Good luck, sweetie........don't worry too much about the outcome if you can......eating disorders are a strong indicator in BPD but must sit alongside other factors.......

Get the RIGHT answers and then the right treatment.......let us know how you go......
