Half-Empty Half-Full Game
by: Tony Medina
Almost any given situation or statement in life can be looked at as negative or as positive. A lot of times we fall in the "negativity" trap because its easier or safer... with that in mind...
Read the following simple poem:
- The bird in the sky
Flies oh so high
alone
Now answer the following questions...
- Why is it a happy poem?
- Why is it a sad poem?
Then... Name one situation or statement in
your life that you looked at negatively that you
could have looked at more positively.
Always remember... there are no losers in any of these games!
You can write your answer down in your journal, or explore them with your therapist or support group. If you haven't started a recovery journal yet, now's the time to start!
What Do You Need?
by: Amy Medina
Each of us suffering with or recovering with an Eating Disorder may feel deep down that there is something we are missing within ourselves, or something that we need from someone that we aren't getting. (love, friendship, attention, independence, understanding, validation, etc. etc.)
- Who is it you need something from? Is it yourself or someone else (if someone else tell us who -- your friends, a family member, your father or mother, a spouse, etc.)?
- What is it you think you need?
- Name three or more constructive ways you can get what you need!
rules: none of your answers can have anything to do with weight or food.
Love Letters
by: Amy Medina
Many of us are extremely passionate people and spend a lot of time writing beautiful love letters to those we carry in our heart, or sending wonderfully sentimental cards to others we care for.
But what about you?
(retorical -- don't answer!)
It's time to write to yourself! The goal of this game is simple... Write a love letter to YOU from YOU! Tell YOU why you're terrific... tell YOU all the things you appreciate about you... tell YOU why you wish to get to know you better and about the things you already know and why they are such endearing qualities.
Rules: No part of your letter can mention anything to do with weight or your eating disorder.
Snowflake for a Day
by: Amy Medina
It is known that each snowflake that falls is completely unique. An individual.
If you were a snowflake falling from the sky and only had a few brief moments to share something about yourself with the snowflake next to you, what would you say that expresses who you are -- something that would make a lasting impression so the other snowflake would always remember you?
Rules:
Your answer cannot be anything eating disorder related.
Your answer has to be one-hundred words or less! Remember, you only have enough time to blurt out a few sentences!!
Color of the Day
by: Tony & Amy Medina
- Pick a color that describes how you are feeling today. Write the color down.
- Describe why you picked the color you did. Write about why you feel like that color and what that color means to you today.
- Get a crayon, magic-marker or color pencil in that color...
if it's related to sadness, anger, frustration or a "down" emotion then scribble scribble scribble on another piece of paper. Look at it, own it. That is your color today. Now, tear the page out if you want. Rip it up if it makes you feel better. Throw it away if it feels appropriate. Mail it to your enemy (hehehehe) if that feels good. Own it and get rid of it.
if it's related to happiness, pride, courage or an "up" emotion then doodle, draw a picture, write down your favorite quote, color boxes and circles all over the page and fold it up -- save it for a day you feel down to look at if you want.
Always remember... we own our emotions and we can do something about how we are feeling!
