IMO that anyone feels the need to do this (in any fashion, piercings, tatoos, etc) is the main concern for a T. Even once is rather important, if you ask me.

I'm also more concerned about the idea of wanting to know how often others cope this way... while I think I can understand the curiousity factor, is there more to it for such an... addiction... coping mechanism like this?

TC of yourselves is the main thing though.
