I always feel terrible afterward, but I feel guilty if I don't try to help them. But guess what, your only responsibility is for you right now! You have to get well first. Easier said than done, but don't let anyone else take advantage of you. Why do the cats even have to stay with you while her house is being finished? If there are workers coming and going, why can't they hide under her bed or something. They need to go back to her apartment. They are not your responsibility and they never were.
I hope I don't sound harsh, but you need to get rid of those bedbugs fast! They're nasty critters and can carry bad diseases.
It's time to take better care of you. Why? You deserve a better life. Users can burn their bridges and sleep on the streets or live in a shelter or go to prison until they learn to stop abusing people and themselves (by getting help of their own). You're on that road. Leave the people, trying to grab your ankles and suck you down into their misery, behind.
