I'm not a student, but I've taught at a school like you mentioned. We had students with varying degrees of mental issues who for one reason or another just were not ready for regular public school. I've found that the students want to help each other and the staff I worked with was very supportive. Our motto was "progress, not perfection" and that's how we taught. I wasn't teaching English or social studies, but helping the students realize how to deal with their mental health issues. Now I teach at an on-line school, which could be another alternative you could look into.
