We all get along very well and have a great work rapport. We laugh, have lunch together and just have a good time at work.
Logically I know that he could have been asking her a personal question or something that I can't answer. BUT, because I don't know...I am jealous.
This is causing me a lot of....I don't know the word, but it really upsets me. I should not be jealous....I shouldn't even care.
I don't want to have these feelings, but I can't get rid of them.

It probably is something very inconsequential. My insecurities always act up like that! I hate when that happens! It's hard to let it go, too.
Perhaps the boss is asking about a family member. Or something else not related to work. Good bosses take an interest in their employees' personal lives, especially their families or pets. Also, he/she could be asking about future leave time, something simple like that.
Maybe you have such good communication with your boss that there is no need to use the IM application.
It could be so many things.
Definitely try to let it go. And try really hard not to ask about it. I know how tempting it would be for me.
Can you sort of wipe it out of your mind?
