Perhaps the boss is asking about a family member. Or something else not related to work. Good bosses take an interest in their employees' personal lives, especially their families or pets. Also, he/she could be asking about future leave time, something simple like that.
Maybe you have such good communication with your boss that there is no need to use the IM application.
It could be so many things.
Definitely try to let it go. And try really hard not to ask about it. I know how tempting it would be for me.
Can you sort of wipe it out of your mind?

You are SO right! I really want to ask about it...it is way tempting!
I am going to try to let it go. It's such a hard thing to let go of because I worry that they are talking about me or that they are conspiring something....ok, maybe there is some paranoia there, too.
I think you are right, about them talking about something inconsequential. I am trying to imagine that they are planning a surprise party for me!
