I've helped several people with self injury issues in the Q&A section. One of the first things I recommend is reading the 'sticky posts' at the top of this forum - there are some very helpful tips on how to avoid hurting yourself. When you self injure, this releases endorphins(the same endorphins from exercise) - these endorphins give you a temporary relief from your mental pain.

The trick is finding good coping mechanisms that work for you. Exercise is a great way to get those endorphins flowing. You can also try holding ice cubes in your hands - this hurts like hell(LOL) and helps alot. You can also try writing on yourself with non-permanent marker.

I'm glad you're getting therapy because you want to get to the root of your pain. Instead of trying to mask your pain with more pain - it would be good if you just accept those thoughts and let them come, instead of trying to stop them. When you accept and deal with your painful issues then hopefully you won't hurt yourself anymore. I also recommend writing down your feelings in a journal. Best of luck and please be kind to yourself.
