i havent read any of the above although i believe it will help many (imposter's usually do not last)
for me, i learned about meditation years ago in the self help section of my local used book store.. along with it came my introduction to Buddhist and Eastern Medicine practices like acupuncture, acupressure, chakra healing, etc...
i began to meditate in earnest about 12 years ago... since then my ability to self control my thoughts and moods with meditation has increased and i am a much calmer person with more focus than years past...
someone here (Spiritual Emergency) led me towards the practice of Tonglen, a world healing meditation which i now do on a regular basis, adapted to my personal way of relaxing and centering (in relation to mandala sciences)... here's a link:

using imagery, symbolism, art therapy, and meditation has helped me to overcome my existential depressive symptoms and allowed me to find meaning in a chaotic world, but it may not be for everyone.. hope this helps
