Congratulations on becoming pregnant!! Usually you would get a referral from your family doctor who would send you to an obstretrician. All women should go for a gyn. check up once they become sexually active. The doctor won't do an internal exam unless the patient is showing signs of labor

If you weren't pregnant then you would receive a gyno. exam. Some women like my self prefer a female doctor. The first time I had one, was when I was 18 - I was mortified and embarassed. But now that I'm older it doesn't bother me at all. Usually they have you fill out a history and they ask you if you have any problems. The doctor does a breast exam(feeling for lumps). Then the doctor inserts a speculum which is expandable - so the doctor can see the cervic. At this point the doctor takes what looks like a long cutip and swabs the cervix, where it's sent to a lab to screen for cancer cells. Once that's done the doctor feels around the lower stomach for any abnormalities. It really not bad at all. For doctors it's just medical just like any other part of the body.

You won't be going through the internal exam while you're pregnant though. Usually once a woman has children - she usually gets over the embarassment regarding that part of her body. When you're in labour there no time to be shy LOL. Best of luck with your pregnancy - make sure you eat healthy and take a prenatal vitamin.
