You really have an extremely good casue to live on; your husband and the son!!!
Downsizing in the name of right sizing has become a corporate slogan these days. They know that if the supply of labour/employees would increase not matched by the corresponding demand, then people are going to get setteld even if they are paid less and would be ready to sacrifice some other perks and benefits.
But these words are not of any comfort as the reality stands right there.

As far as dear Rohag's guess is concerned, I would challenge it. It is not the sales department usually who gets fired first. Usually they start from I. T. department, and then comes finance and accoutns, followed by Adminitration and HR. Sales and Operations are usually the alst one to go, until and unless the organisation discontinues certain segment.
Also certain co-worker might not be a problem, it is actually the company itslef with a motto, pay less and get more. The modern day slavery. Employment has become a blood draining exercise, and things are very much in contrast to the old days.

So dear Onlymedid; the way things are is the way things are. Hope and try for the good times, these could be coming real soon. All the best to you and your family.
