Then go in through the start - control panel. It sounds like you lost your video driver. The good thing about vista is that it usually recovers on its own except for resetting the display settings. I used to have to uninstall and redownload the video driver.

On my computer you right click on blank spot on desktop, select "personalize" then display settings then I slide the tab to the farthest to the right.
