Sabrina, I think one of the first things you need to do is set up a reliable way of checking what you have on your Windows Clipboard at each moment -- that's where your Copys and Cuts are going and where your Pastes are coming from. The "Clipboard Viewer" of Windows 98 has supposedly been renamed "Clipbook Viewer" in XP and may not be available in all versions but if you have it (or can install it) I recommend at least trying it.

If you can't get hold of Clipbook Viewer then keeping a blank Microsoft Word "document" open in another window would probably be a good substitute. With Word 97 at least, I can paste either text or images into a document and it'll show me exactly what I have on the clipboard.
Thanks for this!
Sabrina
