Hi Michele,
good for you in joining a gym and working out. If you do wieght lifting in addition to the cardio you will lose weight faster and notice changes in your body sooner. Just don't over do it in the beginning because then you feel too sore and exhausted and get discouraged. I have to start exercising again too - these last 6 months I haven't done any and I feel so weak. I go in spurts and would like to improve that because it's like starting over. Luckily for me I don't have a weight problem but you can be thin and out of shape too. I'm going to have to get motivated again and start back in my routine. Keep up the good work.
