You obviously saw competence in this individual for what he has to offer the company. With that, I would stick with what your first impressions were of this person, and ignore the rest.
Just accept the fact that you may have to bite the bullet, and tongue, on this decision you've made, and possibly recognize the fact that (just maybe), sometimes we are not as good with our judgments of others as we like to think we are.
Lesson learned....(Although, especially in the professional society, first impressions are the most important), perhaps to try and see the person as a whole, instead of as just a description in text on a resume?
