My father died at the age of 98 some years ago too. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and had short-term memory loss, but his personality was still the same. But in his last months, I would guess, his problems were more than he could take emotionally, and he deteriorated quite a bit. I did not understand it at the time but I think I do now.
