We were all given a 64-gallon container for our recyclables. It is used for mixed papers, metals, glass and plastic. The cans/jars have to be rinsed and labels removed, but it can all be dumped in the same container. It gets picked up every week.
From there, I don't know where it goes. It's convenient to use only one container, but I feel a little sorry for the people who have to separate all that garbage. I would imagine it would have to be done by hand.
Never thought I'd ever have to wash my garbage before throwing it away. I sometimes wonder if I'll get a call saying I didn't clean a can well enough or forgot to remove a label. So far, it hasn't happened.
