I can really relate when you mention the parents that are rather counter-productive for our well-being...school work and depression REALLY don't mix that well.
I'm quite a closed off person myself, hell, alright, I was pretty much a loner from the very start. It all starts from shyness, and slowly tumbles into a rather extremely introverted personality.
With all that time by yourself, drawing, writing, etc. really does help to get your mind off pondering about how damp you might be feeling at the moment. Perhaps trying out various creative outlets might help you find something you're really passionate about that can sort of act like a proxy for that kid you were talking about earlier, a feel good and healthy escape that you just delve into.
