Speaking as someone who made this kind of decision in mid life, I would say it's down to vocational or - non vocational.

If your system is anything like ours in the UK, non vocational means nothing at all in the workplace. I guess you have to decide whether you want work and a pension, or what I got - two philosophy degrees and a lot of free time!
