thank you everyone 
In response to some of the suggestions - my boyfriend can't afford boarding (it would cost in the hundred/s range I believe). We don't have any friends nearby who are staying - almost all are going home.
The only friend he had hoped for JUST responded and said no to Christmas time, MAYBE to a few weeks from now (the last week of break)
It bothers me that it's so last minute, and I was also looking forward to this particular week
