I also want to second ECHOES idea. I have a friend who every year plans her own birthday party. She even orders her own cake so she gets just what she wants. She invites everyone she knows to share it with her. All day long people drop in to bring her birthday cheer. They aren't necessarily people she knows well but might be someone she ran into while out walking her dogs. She knows that if she leaves it to her husband that the day would come and go with little if any acknowledgement. She makes her own party and I think she is brilliant!
