I've got my account set so that I automatically get subscribed to any thread where I've posted. If I don't have anything to say just then but I want to follow the thread anyway, I use "Thread Tools" to subscribe just as if I'd posted.

I keep my subscriptions in two tiers. The newer ones with unread replies show up in bold on my "Subscribed Threads" page, which is always the first page I look at when I come here (I have it bookmarked). I keep older, mostly inactive subscribed threads in a separate "old subs" folder and get notified by e-mail when anyone else replies -- maybe once or twice a month for more than a hundred old threads.

I purge subscriptions for most threads that have been inactive for six months or so. If there's one I'm especially interested in, though, I'll leave it subscribed indefinitely.

One advantage of keeping a subscription on file is that if I want to refer to that thread in another post, I have a link to it without having to search very far.

I agree with all of the above and I do that too!

If you don't actually subscribe to a thread (or prefer not to) that you posted in or started, you can also click on your own profile page, click on "statistics" tab, and click on either the "find all threads started by you", or the "find all posts by you" linkes. This is where you'll also see another member's "thanks" if you don't subscribe to that thread.

(Click on "all thanked posts by you", so they will be easy to spot. It also shows any posts YOU gave thanks on, with a link for that.)

E-mail notification with notify you of new posts without your having to log in to PC. But you have to log on to reply to them. Still, you can at least view posts in your e-mail. Other sites seem to have this feature too.

Like FoolZero, if I really want to follow a thread, I keep them even if no one has posted for months! All it seems to take is one post to "revive" a thread most of the time.

And like FoolZero, my subscribed threads in my folders appear in boldface when new posts are there. Also, any unread threads in the forums are all bold, even if I don't subscribe to them.

Some of my "Shot in the Dark" threads will have e-mail notifications on them, so I'll know that way if there's new replies, rather than keeping them in an active folder. But I don't think you can do an "e-mail" subscription without a "regular" subscription first.

This may depend on your style selected, but when I view threads in the forums, a checkmark will appear in a column on the right meaning I am already subscribed to that thread, and it shows how many times you've posted, plus the date of your last post.

Another tip: When I click on the "My profile" link (NOT "your profile") to the left of the FAQ link, ALL of my subscribed threads, even if in different folders, with any new posts will appear in boldface. I click there to see everything at a glance, even new PM's and visitor messages (who they are from & subject). The notifications may say "3 visitor messages", but clicking on MY PROFILE with list them, just like in your list of PM's, so you can see everything.
