It could definitely be related to SI. I mean, if it hurts and makes you feel temporarily better, for sure! I used to pick/bite all my hangnails while hospitalized as a way to SI...it would hurt and they'd often bleed.

Personally, I'm often not aware that I'm doing these things, and it's done out of anxiety.
