As someone who has set up an introduction meeting on Wed. nite of this week to learn about becomming a volunteer to go to NO, and in talking with a Red Cross representitive on the phone, I want to share with you some of the restrictions on heading to the disaster area.
First off is an introductory meeting which is a 3 and 1/2 hr. class followed a week later by a 4 hour survival type class, followed by the next nite, another 4 hour shelter training class...A week after that, is another 4 hour first aid class...These restrictions are set up by the RC and only after passing these courses is someone allowed to be sent to the disaster area...
I am hoping I will be chosen, but who knows what will happen..perhaps there may be a medical reason I would not be picked...My question to everyone is, How many of these so called heros are rushing down to the disaster area, without any disaster training???
I also have an application in with the Salvation Army, as a back up, in case I am not qualified to help with the RC...As of yet, I have not been contacted by the SA, but perhaps their restrictions may not be as rigid as the RC..
Perhaps this info will be of some help in answering questions about the Katrina disaster rescue efforts!

Sincerely,

SongBird
