The plus sign means they're your PC friends. I don't remember ever seeing an asterisk but if I were guessing, I'd check out "unfriended contacts" first as a possibility.

Oops! I just tried it out. Unfriended contacts show up with a plus sign exactly the same way as friends, and I still have no idea what an asterisk would mean.
