Thanks for your experimenting, Lynn and darkrunner. I tried "stealth mode" myself and sure enough, got an asterisk next to my username in the Who's Online list.

I also noticed a note at the bottom of that page:

+ User is on your contact list

The note didn't mention asterisks, whether I was in stealth mode at the time or not.
