Can you email him? Or how about sending a simple card or postcard saying your sorry and will try better next time. Something that tells him you care about his friendship. Maybe he's just thinking right now that you want some time apart and feels he did something wrong. Maybe you can get the phone card issue fixed and talk it out with him or at least leave a message so he knows your sorry and don't want to lose the friendship.
