The numbers should correspond (roughly) to the relative humidity you're aiming for. 90% would be more like a jungle, with the unit hardly running; 10%, more like a desert with the unit running almost nonstop.

As one of the online articles puts it:

The same article cautions, "... the temptation is to set it to the driest setting and then faint with the next electric bill."
