I haven't been around lately, so I'm not sure if this has been covered or not, but anyone concerned about the welfare of the animals abandoned in Katrina's wake is urged to click on the link above. As of now, click on "read more" on the lead story to sign your name to a petition to urge President and a Senate Committee to explore evacuation options for animals during natural disasters.

You can also read the latest news regarding the ordred shooting of dogs in St. Bernard Parrish and Lt. General Russell Honore (the supposed official in charge)and his refusal to allow the military to forcibly evacuate residents without their pets. This was dated today, WAY too late for many, but apparently now the military is armed with pet carriers to assist residents in taking their pets with them.

There is more info on Peta's site, here's the link to get started and most importantly, sign the petition. It is a disgrace. In my opnion what it means to be a healthy capable adult human being is that we look out for those who cannot help themselves: the elderly, the sick, children, and yes, animals. What better definition of a human being is there? Please sign the petition. Even email your senator and state representative about evacuation procedures that include animal rescues from day one.
