hey saluki-kabooki
i am not sure why the doc would say that about diabetes because it can swing both ways... diabetes can affect either type of insulin production and so the weight can go up or down depending on the type affected. The thyroid is a possibility but thirst isn't usually a symptom of that specifically...
however thyroid hormones can affect the body in such a way that produces diabetes-like symptoms that are temporary.
i have to regulate my thyroid because i have only a tiny, tiny piece left after a tumor claimed it. All the body's hormones work together and one being off will affect the others - regardless of what some amazingly high number of ignorant doctors seem to think

If the tiny piece i have decides to join the game and produce any then it throws off everything else and guess what happens? yep, i start getting small amounts of ketones in my urine and i get really thirsty, etc etc etc
both thyroid disease and diabetes are genetically predisposed but both are manageable with treatment. i know you are good at your own research/reading, so read read read whichever problem it is. My personal experience is that anything hormone related is subtle and variable and it can be difficult to get doctors to pay attention to those sorts of changes. i've run into the attitude that since we can throw synthroid at it where is the problem? It's more complicated than that but it still is manageable.
people may recommend various sources of dietary iodine... stay away from them! Those are good
before a problem develops but taking such supplements along with a thyroid condition can cause problems.
things will work out saluki... the thyroid can sure throw a monkey wrench in things but it's not dangerous if treated. Even with the tumor i had, only one type out of the four is dangerous and those are all very rare.
