I'm not sure what type the cause of your pain is, but Darvocet is a very mild narcotic pain reliever. Some pharmacists say its not much better than taking plain Tylenol. (Half of Darvocet contains the same active ingredient as Tylenol.) I am guessing that the doctor may prescribe Vicodin for you. There are various strengths. If you are allergic to codeine, then there is a chance of being allergic to hydrocodone--the narcotic in Vicodin. BTW, I am allergic to codeine, but not to Vicodin. Methadone is NOT given out but for use with chronic, severe pain.
