Oh Griz, I totally get you. I too have a kitty who is 10 years old and she is my child. She sleeps on top of me. There is this God awful cat next door that sits on the top corner of their house and howls for Teddy (Teddy is a 2.9kg tiny girl) to come out and fight it. If I can't find Teddy and I think that "Gargoyle" is fighting with her I run around the outside of my house yelling at the top of my voice for Teddy. The neighbours know about my mental illness so I'm sure that just confirms thing for them!! lol

Teddy is all I have too.

And it's not OT because I believe that every Beeper I have come across has panic and anxiety disorders too.

All I can say is try to use all you anxiety management tools, keep posting as much as you need to and take kitty to the doc when you feel it is right.
