For those who practice this usage, (mostly the youth), I don't think that it's a matter of functionality, but rather, what is considered cool amongst them.
As with the "teh", it's spelled as they would pronounce its misspelling, (the emphasis on the "t" (let's say it'd sound much like to the word "ten", if there was a silent "n" in it).
IMO, is perfectly fine. It's a fad and as with all things in the fashion cycles, it, too, will pass.
I really don't bother paying attention with the misspellings or mispronunciation of other's. I take it with a grain of salt..to each their own....
What I have noticed more of lately, though, that I think is uncalled for amongst the youth interaction is how (or why) they address each other with extremely foul language and names..yet it's perfectly acceptable between them.
Again, to each their own..but in this case, if anyone were to approach me and address me as "hey, beotch...blah blah", I wouldn't stand for it, (even in jest).
That's where the line is crossed.
