I would like to start out by saying that yes, this bothers me too. It is fine in texts but when people start using it in normal writing or even worse, spoken language, it drives me a bit batty.

Oddly enough though, if you were to present what is considered completely correct written text to someone who lived a couple hundred years ago, they would probably have a stroke. Language is a fluid thing, it lives and changes as time goes on. What we see as horrible butchery will be accepted as correct in a generation or two. Kind of crazy but that is just how it goes.
