The dentist is really scary for me too. But I talked to my dentist about it and he was really helpful. we agreed a signal to tell him I need him to stop (I just put my hand up) and then if I need to spit I can. He also has me take some valium or temazepam before the appt so I am not feeling so scared.

There are places on the web where you can find dentists who are good with phobic or nervous patients. You can find links to them here The What fear site also has some really good tips including a letter you can write to your dentist. There's also a site called Beyond Fear which has a great support forum which I have used - the people there all suffer from dental phobia and are really supportive. They helped me get to the stage where I can go and see my dentist - which I couldn't do for a while.
