Seriously I would use a strimmer, here in the UK you can hire them for the day from any good hire shop. Cut it down to the level your mower will take and take it slow.

I've forgotten all about those places who rent out equipment.
(Be nice if they also offered an operator to go with equipment rental, as well).
I love yard work, too...(used to run a small landscaping business in my youth, while worked at cemetery).
As with perpetuallysad, I wish I were closer to you, as well, Yoda. We'd have a yard maintenance party..yay..sounds like fun.....
