Often, the hardest first step a person has to take is the step to make the decision to seek out help. It sounds as if you're not sure about the decision, and that's holding you back.
There is nothing to fear.
ADD and ADHD are often treated with a combination of medications (such as the popular Ritalin) and psychotherapy. In most cases, if you go to see any therapist who isn't a psychiatrist, most are probably going to recommend a consultation with a medical doctor/psychiatrist to see if you are appropriate for medication. So I would usually head to a psychology or other therapist first, as they'll be able to make an accurate diagnosis and plan your treatment with you.
The research has shown that it's a combination approach to treatment -- medications and psychotherapy -- that can help a person most. Even if you go to a few sessions of the therapy and decide it's not really helping and the medication is (or vice-a-versa), I would encourage you to try both first.
Take care,
John
