I'm glad you went in and that they are trying to accommodate your needs. In my experience, Ativan works well. I've been given substantial doses of it in the ER twice. It does the trick. Of course, receiving it quickly through the IV is much different than the pills, but I think the pills work pretty well too. For me, they do a much better job of taking the edge of than Xanax.
