This does not surprise me. Some exceptionally intelligent people simply cannot flourish within the bureaucratic rigidities of traditional education.
Phantasmagoric, you may need to use the less-traveled paths to reach your fulfillment. In fact, using "the road not taken" may be most compatible not only with your talents but also with your depression. I wish you success.
