I can understand your outrage; what an insensitive and mean-spirited thing to say.
While it was inappropriate beyond measure, people rarely consider that the guilty parties family and loved ones are suffering as well. In both cases someone is losing a loved one - one to death and the other to prison. The mother's expression of her feelings, while inappropriate, probably are reflective of poor impulse control and parenting skills that no doubt played a part in this tragedy.
Too, it is unlikely that the killer's family was insulated from hurtful remarks from the press, courtroom and even the victims family. That certainly doesn't make it right by any means, but it may have contributed to the situation. The families of those accused and/or found guilty are often treated as guilty themselves.
