I am sorry your emotions feel so out of control. Your bf's hospital kinda missed an opportunity to help you out there. At my hospital they would have sent in a social worker in to help you through this and given you resources to help you through future episodes. I would really not know where to start without meds except to say that some people started to feel better after they got on board with a good therapist after a complete physical to rule anything else out. Writing about your feelings in a journal help me. I have also found diet and exercise key. Just walking everyday can get your endorphins going. I hope you find some good ways to help you with your emotions. I also hope your bf gets better soon as well.
