I have taken Topamax for years. Started taking it for migraines but I have BP. It has now been prescribed by the pdoc because of the mood stabilizing effect. I was even able to lower the BP meds b/c it was so beneficial.
I experienced no weight loss or appetite suppressant qualities starting it or thereafter; some do, some don't. However, I have not gained weight either. It does make me drowsy so I have to take it at night with no side-effects in the morning.
At higher dosages, I have tingling in my fingers/arms but does not cause disfunctioning, is just there and goes away at lower dosages. At even higher dosages, myself and many have reported trouble with word recall where you try to say one word and another word beginning with the same letter comes out instead. This can be problematic but goes away when the dose is lowered and is not permanent.
It is imperative to increase your water intake on topamax. The literature indicates risks of kidney stones and it is a real risk if you do not consume more water.
I greatly appreciate topamax. It has been a lifesaver for my migraines and the benefit of mood stabilization.
