I had to jump through hoops to get insurance for my boyfriend. I applied at several companies a few weeks before his student policy expired. The only insurance company that accepted him sat on the application for 65 days ... and then said that because there was more than a 60-day lapse between his old policy and his new one, they wouldn't cover him for any preexisting conditions. I pleaded with them to make the start date retroactive, but... nope. Great. So now I'm stuck paying cash for all his medical bills.
