Scientific articles that have been reviewed and rated on around 400 topics relating to the disorder will eventually be available on a special website.

Professor Vaughan Carr of the Schizophrenia Research Institute says it is a valuable resource for sufferers, their families and carers, as well as practitioners in the field and health planners and administrators.

"There is an awful lot of knowledge about schizophrenia but very little understanding," he said.

"What this library aims to do is to provide the evidence-based information online for anybody to access so that they can get their heads the extent of the knowledge that we have about schizophrenia but also identify the gaps."

Professor Carr says it is the first of its kind because it all based on scientific literature.

"What treatments are effective, how effective they are - there is information on risk factors and antecedents to schizophrenia and what they are and how strong the evidence is in those areas," he said.
