Not sure T's access them so much as recognise them? Pre-verbal regression is a natural occurance, someone without a trained eye may mistake the clients need to get pre-verbal needs met, and acting out pre-verbal trauma's as something thats happening outside of this.

Winnocott is a good palce to start.
