this might be a long short, but check out charity village (look it up - this site is telling me i cant post a link) to see if there are volunteer opportunities near you.

it might feel like a backwards step to work for free, but volunteering can give you job experience, good references, and a sense of purpose. also, once you have spent some time with an organization they may be open to considering you for any jobs that come up.
